Preliminary Task

Preliminary task of Lara DePaula

Preliminary task evaluation, by Lara DePaula In my group for this task, we’ve decided to use as many types of shots that we knew at the time as possible, we began our shot with a POV shot showing a mobile phone being put to play music, we also decided to put the song that the character was listening in the background as a part of a non-diegetic sound to create a feeling of connection between the viewer and the character. We’ve used close up of the feet of the character but tilting it up to reveal more of the character’s physique and location. Match on action shot was used to give a deeper sense of location and reveal some more of the character. A close up was took of the character’s face to show her emotions and feelings towards the song as she sings along with it. We’ve used this close up to emphasize that this character really likes this song and the band, this was intentionally made to imply that this character likes this song so much that she might be able to do challenging things just to have a chance of enjoying a show of this band. A favouring mid shot comes next as a second character comes into the shot, we’ve decided to use this type of shot to show some more of the location and also to show the relationship between those two characters. Also by having the character almost creeping behind the other gives the audience the chance to foreshadow what is coming next. More match on action shots were used to vary the scene and don’t make it one continuous shot. We stuck in using medium shots to emphasize that those two characters had a close relationship between them and even though the second character interrupted the mood of the first one it still wouldn’t complain as they’re friends. We’ve used a mid-shot fading into a close up shot to show the audience that the small irrelevant chitchat was over and that the next scene was going to be serious. In this dialogue sequence we made our biggest mistake as we kept stopping while in the 180 degree line shot, to correct it we should have given a couple of steps before beginning our dialogue so the shots could be more fluent. However to compensate for our mistake we’ve correctly demonstrated how to break the 180 degree line to create tension and drama to the scene. To finish this task we’ve used an extreme long shot for many reasons; to show more of location but to outline that the two characters were quite alone and lonely, implying that they rely on each other quite a lot, also as one character hugs the other we see that even though they’re quite alone there are things more important to them than the emptiness of the space, things such as they’re friendship and they’re reliance on each other, also to add to the drama of the scene we’re decided to make the characters walk past the camera while discussing things to shown that even though the agreement had been set it was a quite troublesome thing to agree as they keep discussing it as the shot fad into the empty space. To conclude I think that my team and I did a quite decent job to demonstrate our knowledge of shot types, match on action, 180 degree line rule and so on, even though we had a few bumps with timing of the dialogue we still demonstrated it quite efficiently and clearly to the audience to understand why we were using those shots and angles.

preliminary exercise by Danika Tankaria
This is my preliminary excercise, we decicded to experiment with lots of different ranges of camera angles and shots and how we could use them to create the right atmosphere to match the mood of the filming. during this process we had decided for there to be two characters and for us to exlore with the locations as well as the cmaerawork. also during this process we had found it difficult to get the right location and we had also found it dificult to follow match on editing and the 180 degree rule, and when we was allowed to break the 180 degree line. We also needed to shoot again as we found that the footage that we had already got did not fit the rules that we was learning and it was also hard to keep to the rules. During the editing process we had again found it hard because we needed to try and keep to the atmosphere of the short film and we discovered that there was alot of things wrong with the shots that we took so we needed to film again in a different location and we found that this location fitted a lot better with the whole atmosphere of the short film. We had a close up of the characers as we wanted to show that there was something wrong between these two characers and we wanted the audience the see the emotions that these characters where feeling. we also had long shots of the two characters and the location to establish the location and where the two characters are located.

Evaluation Of Preliminary Exercise by Michelle Richards
For this exercise we used various camera techniques to show the meaning of what is happening through the atmosphere and the two actors facial expressions. We had to trial this exercise twice as the first time we used the 180 degree rule but we crossed over the line therefore the rule was broken and we couldn't show one of the character's facial expression which was important in that scene because we as the audience needed to see how she would react to her friends suggestion.By having two actors we found this easier as we could focus with the different types of camera shots needed in order to portray the view that the audience need to get across about that character. We had a medium close-up shot of when one character was ringing for the gate s to open, this is marking the moment of what's about to happen within that scene. But then during the editing process we found it difficult as there were some things that went wrong with the filming but then we decided to film in a different location as it would easier for filming and this helped to sustain the type of atmosphere we wanted the film to be set in We also had close-up of the character's faces to show the facial expressions which were linking how they feel in particular scenes. We also had an establishing shot just before the two characters walk down towards the gates to show thats its set outside a school drive way. Overall I learnt why the 180 degree rule is very important as it allows us to see the relationship between the two characters or it could be another character and an object within a scene. Also by doing it two times we can see how its improved as we've edited all the wrong filming and filmed the new which shows that if it doesn't go right the first time keep filming till you get it right and using editing will help us to achieve this. The different camera techniques can help to create different effects within the short  film.
